Advancing Stem-Cell Technologies in Regenerative and Genomic Medicine
Stem cells are the body’s raw materials, the source of all tissues in all living things. Understanding how these cells work increases our knowledge of how diseases develop. Most importantly, they are essential in regenerative medicine, possessing high potential to grow into new tissues to repair diseased or damaged cells in humans.
The Centre for Translational Stem Cell Biology (CTSCB) gives Hong Kong a foot in the door in one of the most exciting areas of scientific and medical research. A team of top-notched scientists, many of whom are authoritative voices in their respective fields, will work together to elevate stem cell technology to new heights. Leveraging on a world-leading patented technology in establishing Expanded Potential Stem Cells (EPSCs) from multiple mammalian species, including mouse, pig and human, the CTSCB team will devote their efforts in translating discoveries into regenerative medicine, organ transplantation and genomic medicine for the benefit of people around the world.
The Centre will develop the next-generation stem cell technology for producing mature and functional cells for regenerative medicine. The use of patented technology enables in-depth study of human diseases such as autoimmune disease, liver and cardiovascular illnesses, and leads to faster development in cell-based therapy, organ transplantation and drug discovery. Ultimately, CTSCB will turn its medical discoveries and home-grown technologies into applications not only for medical diagnosis and treatment, but also biotechnological and agricultural usage to extend the usage of stem cell technologies.
With a vision of transforming Hong Kong into a global innovative hub on stem cell biology, CTSCB will continue to drive Hong Kong’s advanced stem cell research and nurture young scientists in this area through a spectrum of knowledge exchange and global collaboration activities.
